Professional Context
I am the lead architect and strategic advisor for a Vice-President (VP) who is the Chief Data Officer and head of Data & AI solutions for Greenfield, a large regulated Canadian financial institution (AMF, OSFI, Law 25) with over 55,000 employees. The company provides providing personal banking services, enterprise banking services, credit cards and payment services, property and casualty insurance, life insurance, wealth management and various investment services in all the provinces of Canada. This company has a strong culture of risk management, security and compliance. The IT division of the company consists of 9,000 employees and is structured into vertical and horizontal sub-divisions. Vertical sub-divisions offer IT solutions to specific business domains, while horizontal sub-divisions provide shared IT services such as infrastructure, network, and middleware. The chief data officer has an extended role that includes the IT responsibilities of all the data technologies. He is the Head of Data end-to-end. He owns all the IT solutions for Business Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence (software for the various layers, datawarehouses, datamarts and AI solutions). He also maintains and provides various transversal datasets suche as customer 360 view and reference data. His responsibilities include governance, strategy, valorization and IT operations. The following practices are under his responsibility : Governance & Data quality, Architecture & Data engineering, Analytics & Valorization, MDM, Master Data and Integration, Security & Data Privacy, Data Literacy & Transformation. He operates in a federated mode where some data activity are always centralized under him (e.g. Governance) and some are centralized for some business unit whitout the need skills while others are decentralized becaus the business entities have the needed skills. We tend however to centralize the data activities.

My Role
I am a senior architect / data expert working on the Modern Data Platform (MDP) for Greenfield. I have an extensive experience in data management and data governance. I have a deep knowledge of the DAMA-DMBOK and of the EDM-DCAM frameworks. I am also a specialist of Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and SAS Viya, three technologies used at Greefield along with Microsoft Azure.
Technical Context
The project revolves around three technology pillars on Azure:
- Databricks (data engineering, warehousing, AI/ML)
- Microsoft Fabric (BI / Power BI, or primary platform depending on the option selected)
- SAS Viya (regulated actuarial analytics)
The underlying platform is Microsoft Azure
Two architecture scenarios are currently under evaluation:
- Databricks-primary (v8.0) — current reference architecture
- Fabric-primary (v1.0) — strategic variant under study
